Dr Victor Kwok, our psychiatrist, was featured on Capital 958, Mediacorp’s Chinese radio station, in a live interview with DJ Shu Jun. He discussed the topic of loneliness during the festive season in December, shedding light on key findings, including that 1 in 4 people feel lonely at Christmas, while 1 in 3 experience increased stress. Dr Kwok highlighted the heightened risk of depression among older individuals, particularly those who are single, widowed, financially disadvantaged, or coping with medical conditions such as heart disease or cancer. He also emphasised the valuable role community resources—such as Family Service Centres, Care Corners, and Voluntary Welfare Organisations—play in supporting vulnerable groups. In addition, Dr Kwok offered his thoughts and suggestions, including the importance of prioritising quality over quantity in friendships and small steps elderly individuals can take to feel more socially connected.
