Psychosis refers to a group of mental conditions characterized by hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech and behaviour, and a decline in overall functioning. These conditions do not appear suddenly but develop gradually over time. Recognizing the early signs is crucial, as early intervention leads to better long-term outcomes.
Some of the early warning signs include:
- Social withdrawal and behavioural changes – A typically outgoing and active person who suddenly prefers to stay in their room for extended periods may be exhibiting a red flag.
- Mood disturbances – Unexplained irritability, depression, or anxiety can signal the onset of psychosis.
- Memory and concentration difficulties – Some individuals first experience cognitive struggles, leading to a noticeable decline in academic or work performance.
- Changes in sleep patterns and self-care habits – A shift in daily routines and neglect of personal hygiene may emerge in the early stages.
- Early sensory disturbances – These may include hearing unexplained sounds like doors closing, knocking, ringing, footsteps, or tapping. Visual hallucinations, such as seeing shadows or faces, may also occur. A useful way to assess hallucinations is to ask if others can hear or see the same things.
- Suspicious thoughts or paranoia – Developing beliefs that strangers are talking about or intending to harm them may be an early warning sign. In the beginning, these thoughts may not be firmly held, a symptom referred to as ideas of reference.
- Unusual preoccupation with religious or spiritual matters – Some individuals may begin making bizarre connections between unrelated events.
If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these signs, seeking professional advice is essential. Our experienced team of psychiatrists and psychologists at Private Space Medical is here to provide expert assessment and guidance, helping you take the right steps toward mental well-being.
