BIOGRAPHY
Dr Tan Ho Teck is a psychiatrist with more than a decade of experience caring for patients with a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, adjustment difficulties, bipolar disorder, psychosis, dementia, neurodevelopmental conditions and insomnia. He has a special interest in supporting the wellbeing of older adults and is experienced in assessments for Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and deputyship.
Known for his gentle and caring manner, Dr Tan takes the time to understand each patient as an individual. He believes that good psychiatric care is built on trust, empathy and a strong therapeutic relationship, and works alongside his patients to help them navigate difficulties in their journey towards recovery.
Dr Tan is a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, and a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, United Kingdom. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Sydney and holds a Bachelor of Science (Merit) from the National University of Singapore.
He trained and practised as a psychiatrist at Sengkang General Hospital, caring for patients across the lifespan, from youths to older adults. He was part of a team working closely with general practitioners and community mental health partners to provide clinical consultation and build mental health capabilities in the community. He also led the hospital’s neuromodulation service, helping to expand treatment options for patients with psychiatric conditions. During his specialist training at institutions including the Institute of Mental Health, Changi General Hospital and National University Hospital, Dr Tan also supported the wellbeing of children and adolescents as well as full-time National Servicemen (NSFs), reflecting the breadth of his clinical experience across different age groups and care settings.
Dr Tan believes that mental wellbeing is closely connected to a person’s overall health and circumstances. At Sengkang General Hospital, he served as Psychiatry Site Director for the Family Medicine Residency Programme and Psychiatry Clinical Advisor for Punggol Polyclinic. He also contributed to staff wellbeing through the hospital’s Staff Wellness and Protection Committee. At the national level, he contributed to a Ministry of Health workgroup evaluating the clinical value and cost-effectiveness of neuromodulation treatment.
A dedicated educator, Dr Tan has held academic appointments as a Clinical Instructor at Duke-NUS Medical School and Clinical Lecturer at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University. Dr Tan has also contributed to the wider mental health community, serving as a content expert for the national psychiatry residency teaching programme and regularly giving talks to mental health professionals. He also led efforts to refresh senior wellness resources on the SingHealth Health Buddy application, helping patients and families access practical information about mental wellbeing.
Dr Tan is committed to evidence-based treatment that is tailored to each person’s needs and circumstances. He has published in peer-reviewed journals on a range of topics, including quality-of-life outcomes, neurodevelopmental disorders, substance use, eating disorders, psychosis, gender-focused care and insomnia treatment. He has also served as a Site Principal Investigator for a National Health Innovation Centre grant.
As a son, husband and father himself, Dr Tan understands the many roles and responsibilities that patients often juggle in their daily lives. He strives to provide a safe and supportive space where patients feel heard, understood and respected, while helping them regain a sense of stability and move forward with their lives.
