For many people, what they know about psychosis comes from movies or television. They picture someone with multiple personalities who is unpredictable or violent. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Psychosis is an umbrella term that describes a group of mental health conditions, including Schizophrenia, Delusional Disorder, and Schizoaffective Disorder. While the exact causes are not fully understood, it is believed to result from a combination of genetic vulnerability and exposure to stress or trauma.
The most common symptoms are hallucinations, delusions, and disorganised speech or behaviour. Among these, auditory hallucinations—hearing voices that others cannot hear—are the most frequent. Contrary to popular belief, these voices rarely instruct individuals to harm themselves or others.
A common misconception is that people with psychosis act violently because of these “voices” or delusions. In reality, most individuals with psychosis are not violent. In fact, they are far more likely to be victims of violence rather than perpetrators. Their symptoms can make them more vulnerable and less aware of potential dangers in their environment. Sadly, stigma and misunderstanding often lead to discrimination and social exclusion.
It is also important to clarify that psychosis is not the same as having multiple personalities—that condition is known as Dissociative Identity Disorder. Left untreated, psychosis can be deeply disabling. Over time, it may impair a person’s thinking abilities, self-care, and relationships. They may become increasingly withdrawn, leading to what appears to be a fading or “erosion” of their personality.
The good news is that psychosis is treatable. With timely intervention, the symptoms can be managed effectively through medication and psychological support. Early treatment greatly improves outcomes, helping individuals regain stability and lead fulfilling lives.
